Think rainy climates and heavy downpours mean gardening is off the table? Think again! Some plants love wet roots, cool air, and cloudy skies — and you can create a thriving edible garden that soaks it all in.
Start by choosing moisture-loving edibles like:
- Lettuce, spinach, and chard (perfect for cool, wet zones)
- Leeks, onions, and garlic (shallow-rooted and low-fuss)
- Mint, lemon balm, and parsley (herbs that don’t mind wet feet)
Elevate your soil with raised beds or mounds to improve drainage. Add compost, and mix in perlite or coarse sand to help water move freely.
Use mulch to prevent soil splash and reduce fungal issues, and prune crowded plants to improve airflow. Bonus: rain gardens (low-lying, water-catching plots) can host beautiful edible perennials like asparagus or rhubarb!
When life gives you rain… grow leafy greens and herbs. Your soggy patch might be your best garden yet.
